THE HARVEST-TO-HANDOFF FIELDBOOK / Meet the bin

Ventilation starts with the process.

Openings are a design decision to discuss with the supplier and your produce handling team.

Explain the handling environment

Describe where filled containers wait, how they move and which operating conditions the packaging must accommodate. Share your produce handling requirements through the responsible team rather than inferring them from a generic bin.

Ask about the actual configuration

Request the supplier’s intended ventilation arrangement and any requirements for alignment or assembly. Show how containers are proposed to be placed together. Do not add or alter openings without the designer’s review.

Keep changes in the specification

Record the approved configuration, including any liner or other component that affects the system. If the process changes, ask the supplier and handling team to reassess the design before the next order.
